I have been using Blogger for my platform for over 3 years and I have taken the decision to migrate my blog and website over to WordPress.
Over the 3 years I have been using Blogger, Google does not seem to have kept the softeware up to date with developments in Open Source Software. Wordpress has overtaken Blogger in terms of market share and functionality. Blogger is definitely the poor relation and has been neglected.
Google seems to have focused on other developments such as Google+ and new changes in Google Search.
Flaws with Blogger Blogging Platform
- Cannot independently amend title tag and metadata
The title tag and metadata are key criteria for SEO. Is is astounding to see that Blogger has not got the functionality to manage these independently. Hence the SEO opportunities are slim on Blogger. - Cannot have hosted platform
Having WordPress on an independent platform means you have more control over the look and feel of the blog. Although you can install custom HTML on blogger, it isn’t as flexible. - More themes on WordPress
There are countless themes on WordPress to kick start the look and feel of the site. The types of themes vary based on how you want to structure the content. - Lack of plugins
There are thousands of plugins on WordPress that integrate and increase the functionality of the software. Everything from RSS syndication through to e-commerce. The lack of plugins on Blogger is an indication that companies do not see this platform as a priority. - Ability to do custom development on WordPress
Wordpress is built in PHP which is one of the oldest open source programmes in the world. The ability to be able to customise plugins so you can add in custom fields or tailor the functionality to your business makes WordPress the superior software.
